SMART Target(s) 27th February:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART target for today is to record the live drums and the bass for the Florida track by the end of today with the group’s help. By doing so, we need to set up the drum mic around the drums so the drummer can provide his support to hear the track before recording the live drums and then we can record the bass from the technician who knows how to play the bass later on today until the end of the session. By doing so, we need a jack-to jack lead to plug the bass guitar into the mixer to connect the software programmer so we can listen live while he’s playing.
Before we record the drums, I have to assign my group members their job roles of setting up the drum kit so from this process, the team put together the team need to capture the drummer when laying down his drum rifts.
OUTCOME: We successfully recorded the live drums with the support from the drummer who we thanked him for his assistance and we will ask him again for the next live track. We didn’t record the bass due to the technician’s shift was about to end early before our session have ended. So we then asked the technician if we can book the studio for Wednesday afternoon with him to record the bass. He booked his slot for us to use the studio from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.
When I was explaining about what drum mics to set it up as I was drawing the board of the drum kit with the mics numbered in order around it, some of my group members was not with it, some could not pay an attention of what I was talking and some who kept on walking out after every two minutes approx. or more. After I gave my group members a job role, I see some of them weren’t doing their job probably so I have to inform them the right way to implement the process. In conclusion with the session today, my team was not fully with it and have to pick some of their slack of some of my team members but we completed the session with drummer even though we had problems.
SMART Target(s) 1st March:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART Target for today is to record the bass which we originally meant to record for the Florida track on 27th February. By doing so, we need a jack-to jack lead to plug the bass guitar into the mixer to connect the software programmer so we can listen live while he’s playing.
OUTCOME: We successfully recorded the bass with the support from the technician who we thanked him for his assistance and we will call him again for the next live track. We recorded the first part of his bass, but the technician didn’t like it so we re-recorded another take which he added the groove he puts into the track makes it a bit of funky. We adjusted the recorded bass take two due to one of us cut it midway so we tweak it to hide out the mistakes.
On this day, it was only the two of us in the group working with the technician, unfortunately I did not know where the others were but the technician helped us to record his groove of his bass playing style onto the track which we liked what he did.
SMART Target(s) 6th March:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART Target for today is to record the live electric guitar and the live acoustic guitar with our tutor for the Florida track. By doing so, we need a Direct Input Box with the jack-to-jack lead to plug the electric and acoustic guitar into the mixer to connect the software programmer so we can listen while he’s playing separately.
OUTCOME: We successfully recorded the electric and acoustic guitars separately with the support from our tutor who we thanked him for his assistance and we can ask him again for the next live track. We had difficulties of getting the sound of both guitars separately due to technical problems with the software programmer that nearly annoyed us. In the end, we sorted out with a tricky technique we tweaked the software programmer.
One of the major problems with this group today is their lack of attention in completing the task. I found myself having to cover a few of the team to meet the target needed for today’s SMART Target.
SMART Target(s) 20th March:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART Target for today is to record the live piano sound from the Korg synthesizer for the Florida and Compton track which I will be playing the chords and recording the drums for the Compton track with the same drummer who I asked him previously. By doing so, we need a jack-to-jack lead to plug the Korg sent to the software programmer via soundcard and getting the drum mic around the kit like previously before.
OUTCOME: We successfully recorded the piano part in the Florida track and the Compton track who I was genuinely pleased that the Florida track is almost completed. However, we didn’t record the drums due to the room we were in couldn’t connect the wall box from the live room to the mixer board in the mixing and mastering room. We could have moved to another room but the rooms were all filled in before the session started.
I tried to get the recording of the piano for Florida and Compton tracks with the drums on the latter for the last two weeks due to bookings couldn’t meet, two of my group members were absent due to mutual consent, there was a special event in the college, everyone was doing their assignments and the technician was off on holiday for a week.
On this day, it was only the two of us in this group activity today due as I mentioned above were off college, but felt I could’ve been in another room, but as every group rotates, there’s no “ifs” and no “buts.” So I decided to book the extra session for this Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00pm.
SMART Target(s) 27th March:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART Target for today is to record the drums, the electric guitar and the vocals for Compton and Florida separately. By doing so, we need a drum kit with the drum mics around the kit with the drummer, the D.I. Box with the jack-to-jack lead to plug the electric guitar to the software programmer to allow my tutor to play and the microphone stand with the condenser and the XLR cable directly to the software programmer as well. Also, I need to provide lyric sheet for a singer to read over while recording. I originally wanted to do this on Wednesday for the drums and the bass but due to the drummer was off sick and my colleague could make it due to traffic problems.
OUTCOME: We successfully recorded the vocals from the singer who felt a bit nervous but we thanked her for her support in the Florida track which sounded good and attracting. However, we couldn’t get the drums and the electric guitar recorded today due to the drummer was running behind of his group’s work and someone from another group took over the drum kit which we weren’t aware of that ran out of time. Also, I couldn’t get my tutor to record the electric guitar due to waiting on the drum kit to record so I can get my tutor as fast as I can.
On this day, one member of my group came back today and was more supportive on the writing part and got the singer in by his choice. Even though, I could have got the drums and the electric guitar recorded but luckily I booked the session on Wednesday which will be the last time to use it before getting everything done and dusted.
SMART Target(s) 29th MARCH:
TARGET FOR TODAY: My SMART Target for today is to record the drums and the electric and bass guitars for the Compton track on the last day before the deadline at the end of this week. By doing so, we will need a drum kit with the mics around the it and a drummer who will be supporting and playing live while we record from another room I booked yesterday. For the bass part, we will need the jack-to-jack lead to plug the bass guitar to connect to the software programmer directly. Then after, we will plug the jack-to-jack lead onto the electric guitar to the software programmer via D.I. Box.
OUTCOME: Unfortunately, due to everyone went to the activity session from 1 to 3pm, none of the targets have been completed. This was due to the fact that my group members (excluding one who’s no longer in our group for personal issues) went home along with everyone else and the drummer went home before the session began. I feel it’s been a waste of time for me to book extra sessions which only worked successfully for one session on the 1st March while everything else was miss timed, the technician went on holiday and I can’t hardly bring my group members in the studio for one session.
However, I managed to complete two live tracks which the Florida track is fully recorded live with the vocals for the chorus parts only, while Compton is partly recorded live with no vocals. The only part in the Compton track that has two live parts is the piano and the flute sounds from the Korg synthesizer. I can say that it’s a hard job to organise and write out plans to meet the deadlines but not everything can be done if things could have been easier for my group members to be in the room rather than time wasting walking in and out of the room, not bothered do anything and turning up at all unless there’s an excellent excuse. To conclude, if there was another scenario like that again, I would be stricter than before and if anyone is not interested, I would say “there’s a door if you can’t co-operate.”
